Operation Shellfish - Over two thousand Anti-Aircraft Shells were found under the Verrazano Narrows Bridge.
On March 6th 1954, crewman aboard the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. Bennington made an alarming discovery. A barge which had been lashed to the the pier the day before was missing. Aboard the missing barge were 14,460 ammunition shells. Somewere on the derelit barge's voyage the cargo of 14,460 shells had been lost at sea. Fifty seven years later, Gene Ritter and his dive team found over 2,000 live shells in New York harbor. Though it is possible that the shells found are not from the U.S.S. Bennington, the types of shell located lead Ritter and his team to believe that they are in fact from the wayward barge.
